How To

How To Survive A Home Invasion

Home invasion is scary, especially for children. We didn't expect to live through home invasion when we started our journey with installing a home security system. Here are the lessons we have learned thus far.

  1. Do Not Allow Your Children to See The Attackers. Two men entered our home while our children were asleep upstairs. We took them downstairs until they arrived at the police station. Although our children weren't injured, they were traumatized enough.
  2. Lock Up All Valuables. The safe is located in our bedroom. We keep all valuables locked up. Even if someone breaks in to the house, they won’t even be able get it.
  3. Keep an eye on Burglars. Our neighborhood is known for its high number of burglaries. We are always on the lookout for suspicious cars and people.
  4. Always have a backup plan. Our family will be financially taken care of financially if anything happens. We have also made a plan to leave this country, if needed.
  5. Be prepared. Be prepared in case you are ever forced to defend your own life. Be prepared with food, water, as well as other supplies.
  6. Get help immediately by calling 911. If someone breaks into your house, dial 911 immediately. It's better not to wait for someone to break into your home than to call the police.
  7. Use common sense. Do not let anyone enter your home if you don't feel at home. Don't invite strangers over.
  8. Get Help From Neighbors Or Other People In The Area. If you feel uneasy, call friends or neighbors. They can be there to help you while you call 911.
  9. Keep your cool and do as instructed by officers. Stay calm and do exactly as instructed by officers. Do not flee or resist arrest
  10. Take pictures of any evidence. All evidence collected during an investigation should be photographed. This includes fingerprints, blood samples and other items.
  11. File A Report With Local Law Enforcement. You can file a police report even if nobody was hurt. This could help prevent you from being convicted of future crimes.
  12. Call the Insurance Company immediately. Call your insurance company immediately. You can tell them all about what happened and they will send an adjuster out to assess the damage.
  13. Retire Personal Belongings. Before you leave the scene, remove personal belongings. You can take off any expensive jewelry and store it somewhere safe.
  14. Make sure you take care of yourself. Clean up after yourself. Make sure you empty the trash, clean up any broken glass, and lock all doors.
  15. Don't Talk About What Happened. It is not a good idea to talk about the events that happened to you. You never know who may try to use this information against or against you.
